Maahanmuuttajien äänitorveksi aiotun Siirtolaisparlamentin suunnittelu jatkuu. Hankkeelle riittää myös vastustajia, mutta idean isä, päätoimittaja Alexis Kouros uskoo, että Siirtolaisparlamentista olisi etua jopa maahanmuuttokriittisille. Käytännössä kyse on kansalaisjärjestöstä, joka kokoaisi eri ikäiset ja eri taustaiset siirtolaiset puhumaan asioista yhdessä. - Kouros haluaa puhua nimenomaan siirtolaisista, sillä hän katsoo, että sana ”maahanmuuttaja” antaa väärän kuvan. - Johanna Suurpää, oikeusministeriön Demokratia- ja kieliasioiden yksikön johtaja, kertoo ohjelmassa, miltä hanke ministeriön silmin näyttää. Siirtolaisparlamentti edistäisi integraatiota

Siitä lähtien kun esittelimme siirtolaisparlamentin idean tiedotusvälineille viime kesänä, olemme saaneet runsaasti myönteistä palautetta ja kiinnostusta niin suomalaisilta kuin siirtolaisiltakin. Hanketta on myös vastustanut pieni, mutta äänekäs joukko. Vastustajien tiedot hankkeesta ovat peräisin yksittäisestä lehtijutusta tai pohjautuvat puhtaasti väärinkäsityksiin. Heistä kukaan ei ole ollut meihin suoraan yhteydessä. Vastustus perustuu siis tietämättömyyteen.

Siirtolaisparlamentti on järjestötason toimintaa, eikä se ole päätöksentekoelin.

Sana parlamentti juontuu ranskankielisestä sanasta parler ja se tarkoittaa keskustelupaikkaa. Siirtolaisparlamentin tarkoituksena on olla nimensä mukaisesti keskustelufoorumi jossa siirtolaisten edustajat vaihtavat ajatuksia heitä koskevissa asioista. Nämä voivat olla esim. kaksoiskansalaisuuskysymykset, lasten oman kielen ja kulttuurin opetus, suomen kielen koulutus, työllistyminen, siirtolaisten osallistuminen yhteiskunnalliseen keskusteluun ja päätöksentekoon, jne.

It’s time to have a voice

The immigrant community in Finland lacks a unified voice. A new initiative could solve that problem.

Discussions about immigration are running hot in Finland, and it is going to be a major topic in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Finnish political parties have traditionally had some immigrant candidates, although none has been elected to the parliament so far.

Now, a new initiative aims to build immigrants their own parliament. A long period of planning is finally turning into action and a group of influential immigrants has joined forces to make it happen. Alexis Kouros, Umayya Abu-Hanna, Ahmed Akar, Jeremy Gould, Mustafa Gürler, Eilina Gusatinsky and Mulki Mölsä have formed the establishing committee that aims to initiate this new democratic process.

Immigrant Parliament of Finland (IPF) will be the first of its kind in the world. An old and successful model, democracy, is taken into new use to give a unified voice to the immigrant community and help them integrate into Finnish society.

If all goes well, by the time that the newly elected Finnish eduskunta convenes next year, there will also be an immigrant parliament in Finland.

Aiming to turn a monologue into a dialogue, IPF can revolutionise how immigrants have been participating in their new homelands. Here are questions and answers about what it is and why we need it badly, for the sake of both immigrants and the Finnish society at large.

Q: What is the Immigrant Parliament of Finland and why do we need it?

A: Immigrant Parliament of Finland (IPF) is an independent and non-political organisation where elected members of the immigrant community would come together and discuss mainly immigrant-related issues and present their views to the Finnish society, government and officials. This will solve the problem of a currently missing unified voice from the immigrant community. There is a lot of discussion about immigration and immigrants right now, but the immigrant community is talked about and not talked to or listened to. In cases where an immigrant appears in the media or as an adviser to officials on immigration-related issues, he or she cannot currently represent anyone or anything more than own opinion.

IPF is going to change all that. The voice of the immigrant community would be presented to the society in a democratic fashion. This voice cannot be ignored any more. On the other hand, officials and the media will find a partner in IPF. Hopefully, this will start a dialogue – instead of the monologue going on right now.
